Home School Support Services – Fall 2020
StairWay5 STEM Academy – Home School Tutoring and Support Services provides a safe, consistent and academically motivating environment for students in grades 4-8 (ages 10-14). Registration is open now.
Daily onsite tutoring support in English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Spanish/French and Technology for students starting grades 4-8 this Fall. The 12-week session runs from August 31st through November 20th, 2020.
Max 4 students / 1 instructor ratio. Seating 6 feet apart. No shared materials. Masks/face shields required when not seated or closer than 6 feet. No more than 10 people in the building at one time – maximum of 8 students for the Fall program. Staff and students must follow all COVID-19 related processes and procedures.
Daily classes on site Monday through Friday from 9am – 12pm and 1:30pm – 4pm. August 31st through November 20th (12 week Fall session).
Students will progress through the curriculum at their individual pace.
Core academics – Mornings 9am-12pm
Daily 1 hr sessions: English Language Arts and Math.
2-3 times/week 1 hr sessions: Science and Social Studies/History.
Enrichment Classes – Afternoons 1:30pm-4pm
2 times a week/1 hr sessions: Spanish and French
Daily 1.5 hr sessions: Technology (Coding, Robotics, Digital Media). Technology students build a Digital Portfolio of their work.
Lesson Plans and Curriculum
Curriculum Plans (subject topics, online resources) will be provided to meet Home School reporting requirements for core subjects. Spectrum, Kuman, Singapore Math, Khan Academy and similar resources will be utilized.
Daily and/or weekly updates for each student for each subject. Use these to submit any reports required for Home Schooled students.
Includes undergraduates/graduates in that subject of study from the University of Iowa. Technology course instructors work in their areas of expertise.
FALL 2020 FEES:
- Mornings only – $225 / week
- Afternoons only – $190 / week.
- Mornings and afternoons – $335 / week (~20% discount)
Non-refundable deposit of 40% of fees due upon registration for the Fall 12-week session. Remaining fees billed on a monthly schedule (October 1, November 1). Registration opens August 1st.
Students must leave the building for lunch (12pm – 1:30pm) to reduce the risk of infection while eating and to allow staff to sanitize the facility as needed. Interested parents will be linked for carpool options.
Private online tutoring can be scheduled separately – days and times are flexible. Rate $45/hr.
Spring session Jan 4th – May 28th (20 weeks). No class during Spring Break (March 15th – 19th). Registration opens November 1st.

- Dual Enrollment – part-time enrollment by subject area or extracurricular at a student’s attendance area school. Parents or guardians are responsible for any instruction students do not receive while at their attendance area school.
- Competent Private Instruction (CPI)
- Opt Out – Parents using any CPI option must provide instruction for at least 148 days per school year, with at least 37 days per quarter, but there is no legally-defined mechanism for verification.
- Opt In – similar to above but students must complete an annual assessment or submit portfolio

StairWay5 tutors do not hold an Iowa teacher licenses. As a result, students may need to take the annual assessment in some cases. Please contact your district’s Home School Assistance Program for details, forms and reporting requirements.
You must notify your school of your child’s change in status to Home School and indicate which Home School option you are selecting (Dual Enrollment or Competent Private Instruction). These options have different reporting requirements. Contact Iowa City HomeSchool Assistance for more information.

StairWay5 has expanded its focused Technology, Engineering and Math enrichment programs to provide instruction and tutoring services in core subjects of English Language Arts, Science, History in a safe, small group setting. In addition, we recognize the benefits of learning a foreign language and have also included Spanish and French to our enrichment program.
